CBR TV @ CCI: Joe Quesada on Marvel Movies, DC Comics Relaunch, Marc Silvestri & More

Marvel Entertainment CCO Joe Quesada paid his annual visit aboard the CBR TV Comic-Con yacht to discuss all things Marvel, beginning with last weekend’s hit movie “Captain America: The First Avengers,” the challenge in building from one character’s movie to the next, bringing in new directors for future projects and sequels. Quesada also looks at past movies, discussing what they’ve learned from their mistakes as well as successes.

Quesada also weighed in with his thoughts on the September DC Comics relaunch, vocalizing his hopes for the initiative to succeed while questioning the specific marketing decisions and announcements DC has announced thus far. He also goes into Marvel’s response – direct or otherwise – to DC’s annoucement, Marc Silvestri joining Jason Aaron on the Hulk and more.

i like how all of the Editor Picks videos feature a middle aged man talking with his hands.

    cap’s action was too slow.

Joe bad-mouthing DC over its recent decision (and a bad one) to revert to all #1′s: Talk about hypocritical. Thanks for utterly ruining Marvel continuity, Joe. It’s a financial relief not to have to collect Marvel anymore.

    • Amarcozzi1995

yeah and he says Marvels been doing the heavy lifting?really. I forget where i readu00a0 it but i heard Most of Marvels profit now comes from their Movies. Only a minscule amount is actually from their comics.

  • Cup O’ Hate

I can’t stand this guy… he’s so full of himself it makes me sick. u00a0If I’m sure of anything it’s this… he does not care at all that I don’t buy any Marvel books, and it’s not because of the characters or the creators. u00a0I’m sure that they have some really great books. u00a0But I hate their business practices and all the shady stuff they’ve done in the past including that buy back of Blackest Night books for some kind of Deadpool variant. u00a0Talk about arrogance. u00a0Can’t stand Marvel since the 80′s when they glutted the market for the sole purpose of putting other publishers out of business. u00a0They suck. u00a0I would read Archie comics before I buy a Marvel book.

    • Gnarlk

yep, a true obnoxious putz of dubious talent…

  • http://twitter.com/serpico71 CHris Kaufman

SImply Marvel cannot compete with DC’s top characters, but DC can’t compete with Marvel’s secondaries. u00a0Joe says Marvel does not manage their publishing schedules around what DC does and then throws out a ‘hypothetical’ about loading up their September schedule to break the customers banks, thus countering. u00a0hmm… u00a0such maliciousness easily percolates off the top of your head, Joe? u00a0No wonder even the Marvel fans can’t stand you.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=812867845 Hysan Gearring

Hardly hypocritical of him to talk about DC, and he actually said “I hope it works.”u00a0 I personally wouldn’t be as diplomatic as he was.u00a0 I think DC is making a huge mistake, and I happen to love some of the ideas they are coming up with.u00a0 But, it’s typical DC….some good ideas, but the overall message and line are trite and crappy. I have to wonder if you guys actually watched the video. And the truth is, Marvel has been regularly kicking their tails. AND the interviewer did call him on the number one issue problem.

  • Just a Guy

I can see all the hate for Joe Q, but what is more noticeable, is that the CBR guy just LOVES to hear himself talk…

  • JoeComics

At least he was straight (far as I can tell) about his attitude towards DC’s relaunch/reboot. I must just be cynical or naive.u00a0 DC announces their NuDC 52 and same date digital. After that Marvel announces a new UNcanny X-Men and doing same date digital on Spider-Man and X-men. Little too much coincidence there. Other then that decent interview.

  • Mike Steinberg

I would love to know how comics are made. Can marvel make a documentary and post it here ?

How can you DC fanboys think that he was serious? He is just joking around about DC and thinking he is so great. He even wishes DC luck.

  • Buzzetta

Worried about how DC presents all of the changes? u00a0THIS coming from a guy who waved a magic wand and altered Spider-man?

re: publishers reacting to fan reaction. that’s bull, that it’s a wrong move. remember the Waid/Wieringo FF? im sure they regretted listening to the fans back then, right? or when DC brought Stephanie Brown back and made her Batgirl, right? or when they DIDN’T listen to fan backlash and went ahead with the Bilson Bart Allen Flash…

Cap was great; so was Thor. Fans who really get mad at the reps for each company have to realize they’re doing their job and would switch jobs if the money was right.u00a0u00a0 The competition between each company has produced better comics from DC and Marvel, and DC now needs to focus on producing better movies (besides the sublime Batman franchise).

  • Larfleeze2814

Tell me, why do we always somehow have to rip on DC? I mean, shut up. THey don’t say that about you guys

    • Gnarlk

because quesada (and mcfarlane as well) are loudmouth idiots who couldn’t create anything of legitimate worth, so they can feel like big men by insulting the company with better characters.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IVXIUGIJKB5JCUGORJZTTUKVI4 Chachi

I wonder how many of the people crying about it being hypocritical actually pulled their heads out of their asses long enough to HEAR what he said, about how he hopes it works, how it would be good for the industry, praising Lee, Morrison, and Johns, etc.nnAlso, what he said was 100% accurate in terms of the mixed marketing, about what’s still in play and what isn’t, how it’s going to work when we hear stories like Blackest Night happened, but seeing that several characters involved no longer exist, or ever have existed, how some characters are starting completely from scratch, and others have mixes of previous history, etc.nnDo I always agree with Joe or the way he comes across?u00a0 No.u00a0 But all of these morons who seem to do nothing but hate one company or the other are the REAL hypocrites. Yeah, keep complaining about how Marvel does countless events, but say nothing about DC’s steady stream of them since Infinite Crisis.u00a0 Keep crying about how DC doesn’t care what the fans have to say and then ignore how ill received One More Day was by longtime fans, etc.

  • Bobo

DC Comics Relaunch smells of desperation to me. That’s why they will always be the minor leagues to Marvel’s major leagues.

God Marvel has been just wonderful this year.

  • Erick016

you guys are such babies… no wonder us comic book folk get such a bad rep.

  • Ciro

Independently of if he thinks DC’s strategy is good or bad, ending the statement by saying “well end up kicking their asses anyway, we always kick their ass” oh and “nobody loves poking fun at DC more than I do” just put in evidence how incredibly tacky this guy is…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IVXIUGIJKB5JCUGORJZTTUKVI4 Chachi

It wasn’t obvious to you he was saying it in jest, especially as he was laughing?u00a0 Like when sports teams rib on each other?u00a0 Seriously?u00a0 Are the Boston Red Sox tacky when they give props to the Yankees and then say they love to poke fun at their rivals?u00a0 Is everyone’s sarcasm button failing this week?

  • Anonymous

Yeah….no. After september DC is going to be kicking marvels ass.

  • Joe Kerr

that interviewer is a magor kissass and Joe would not know taste if it hit him in the face.
