CBR TV @ NYCC 2011: Alex Maleev on “Daredevil,” Brian Michael Bendis & More

CBR TV spoke with Eisner-Award-winning artist Alex Maleev about his career and how his and writer Brian Michael Bendis’ creative relationship has developed over the years, the experience of working on the “Spider-Woman” comic and motion comic project and what he would try differently if he ever approached a similar project in the future.

Maleev’s use of photo reference was also discussed, with the artist explaining how he casts real people in the roles of his characters rather than relying on a program like Poser which he says results in an unnatural stiffness, the use of photography as storyboarding and his favorite – and least favorite – things to draw.

The artist wrapped by talking about his desire to illustrate a children’s book, a result of having become a father, reading books to his son and realizing what he’d like to share with his kids.

One of the best in the business.

  • Robert Lee

I loved his work on Daredevil.u00a0 And then I tried to get a couple of them signed at a convention.u00a0 He is the biggest jerk I have ever seen in 10 years of going to conventions, and I now boycott anything he works on.

He performed such an amazing kindness to my family and has always been kind and generous with his time and talent when dealing with us…odd how some people are calling him a jerk. Maybe he was reacting instead of being offensive. just a thought anyway.

    • Robert Lee

I assure you that is not the case, so your thought is incorrect.u00a0

      • Me

Sounds like Robert is the jerk…nnMaleev and Bendis are genius, by the way.u00a0 Scarlet, is an incredible graphic novel.

        • Robert Lee

You’re right.u00a0 I’m the one who refuses to sign autographs for adults and children alike, and takes gifts for other artists right in front of the gift giver.u00a0 Oh wait, that’s Maleev.u00a0 I or my close friends have personally witnessed these actions.u00a0 You have not, so you obviously don’t know what you are talking about.u00a0
